Canada Over The Edge

This series explores the features that define Canada: the most expansive coastline in the world and the world's longest undefended border. It's a never-before-seen view of Canada, rising up and bearing witness to our nation's diversity and beauty. The meeting place of the ocean and land is birthplace of  this country's history and the frontlone of climate change. Our borders seperate from our neighbours, but also reveal how closely intertwined our histories and futures are. Shot in breathtaking HD, CanadaL Over the Edge will capture Canada's vast geographical and cultural panorama. It is a testament to our history and a time capsule for our future.

The first 13-episode cycle focuses on the rugged beauty and history of Canada's Atlantic Provinces: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. Hidden coves in Nova Scotia once sheltered pirates, privateers and bootleggers. The tiny border towns of New Brunswick were the frontlines of an undeclared war between Canada and the USA. Cape Breton's highlands rise up calling to Celts of all nations on the Eastern shore. PEI's Confederation Bridge is a 13-kilometer marvel of engineering. The Bay of Fundy's record -high tides could hold the future of alternative energy. And the Grand Banks of Newfoundland are the richest fishing grounds in the world - but for how long? What will these landscapes look like in 20 or 50 years? How will climate change, international politics, migration and human greed affect them?

Canada has over 200,000 kilometres of shoreline - the longest of any nation on the globe. Our 9,000km border with the USA remains open and undefined - even in an age of global terrorism and increased security.

How we Got

Matt Frewer (Max Headroom) is a human search engine, racing around the world to reveal How We Got the traps and trappings of the modern world.

Graffiti, Divorce Lawyers, Las Vegas Casinos, Fast Food and Email. How We Got shows that the most modern ideas answer the most basic human needs, but the web of connections to get from cave painting to modern graffiti culture is a tangle of international ideas and inventions only Max Headroom could unravel.

The series looks at things that we think of as quintessentially modern (yet not always “new and improved”) like mobile phones, hip hop, credit cards, university, the news, movie stars, etc. and explores the things that had to happen throughout history to get to this point. For instance, to get Vegas you need: cards, dice, gambling, air conditioning, hydroelectric dams, entertainment spectacle, gangsters, highways and so on… a pyramid of ideas, technology and history reaching back to the most basic human hopes, dreams and a desire: to get rich quick.
